The cat and the Moon

Esta Lua é portuguesa mas o gato do poema viveu no princípio do século passado e, muito provavelmente, era Irlandês.

THE CAT AND THE MOON                            O Gato e a Lua

HE cat went here and there
And the moon spun round like a top,
And the nearest kin of the moon,
The creeping cat, looked up.

Black Minnaloushe stared at the moon,
For, wander and wail as he would,
The pure cold light in the sky
Troubled his animal blood.
Minnaloushe runs in the grass
Lifting his delicate feet.
Do you dance, Minnaloushe, do you dance?
When two close kindred meet,
What better than call a dance?
Maybe the moon may learn,
Tired of that courtly fashion,
A new dance turn.
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
From moonlit place to place,
The sacred moon overhead
Has taken a new phase.
Does Minnaloushe know that his pupils
Will pass from change to change,
And that from round to crescent,
From crescent to round they range?
Minnaloushe creeps through the grass
Alone, important and wise,
And lifts to the changing moon
His changing eyes.

W. B. Yeats (1865-1939)

O gato passeava aqui, ali,
E a lua girava qual pião,
E, parente próximo da lua,
Furtivamente, o gato olhava o céu.

O negro Minnaloushe olhava, fixo, a lua
Pois, embora miasse vagueando,
O seu sangue animal e agitado
Pela luz pura e fria lá no céu.
Minnaloushe corre pela erva,
Erguendo as patas muito delicadas.
Danças, acaso, Minnaloushe, danças?
Quando parentes próximos se encontram
Há lá coisa melhor do que dançar.
Talvez a lua consiga aprender,
Enfastiada desse tom cortês,
Novo passo de dança.
Minnaloushe desliza pela erva
De um outro lugar enluarado,
E a lua sagrada e elevada
Entrou agora numa nova fase.
Saberá ele que as suas pupilas
Passarão de mudança em mudança,
E que de fases cheias a crescentes,
De crescentes a cheias mudarão?
Minnaloushe desliza pela erva,
Importante, sábio e solitário,
E levanta para a lua mutante
Os olhos em mudança.
